The mission of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation is to improve the mobility of people and goods while expanding transportation choices in the Commonwealth.

To accomplish this mission, we will:

Efficiently Manage Programs and Funds
We will responsibly administer programs and funds that empower our clients to deliver efficient, effective transportation services.

Develop Policies
We will develop policies which enable the establishment, maintenance, improvement and promotion of rail, public transportation and commuter services throughout the Commonwealth.

Communicate Effectively
We will enthusiastically and accurately represent the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation in all communications.

Advocate for Rail and Public Transportation
We will champion the causes and encourage the proponents of change for the improvement of all modes of transportation. We will work to increase mobility choices for the citizens and businesses of the Commonwealth.

Develop Plans and Programs
We will work cooperatively to develop and implement action plans that meet the needs of our many customers, from rail and public transportation providers to the general public.

Develop and Implement Best Practices
We will develop and maintain superior internal procedures and management practices.
