On August 23, 2000, Executive Order 71 (00) was signed by Governor Jim Gilmore to increase use of public transportation
by state employees in the northern part of Virginia.
The program will pay a maximum of $105 per month to state employees commuting by public transit or vanpool.
Benefits will be distributed to employees monthly in the form of "Metrocheks," which can be used on all forms of public
transportation in the area, including vanpools.
The new program took effect on October 1, 2000 and covers all full time employees north of and including
Fredericksburg. It affects 52 state agencies and institutions with employees in the Northern Virginia.
Agencies are given the option of including part time employees as well.
