WORK WE'RE DOING

Transforming Freight in Virginia

Overview

The Transforming Freight in Virginia initiative maximizes the capacity and efficiency of Virginia’s transportation network by identifying the technology, equipment, and infrastructure enhancements that can be used to increase the percentage of goods moving in and out of the Port of Virginia by rail. This initiative builds upon existing efforts initiated by the Port of Virginia, Class I and shortline railroads, localities, and the VEDP by capitalizing on existing funding and new funding opportunities. DRPT is bringing together multiple agencies and private sector partners through this initiative to deliver a program of projects from a systems perspective at strategic locations. By collaborating with freight industry leaders and leveraging the power of freight rail, DRPT is enhancing economic development in the Commonwealth. To accomplish this vision, DRPT will build upon its existing freight rail grant programs: the Rail Industrial Access Program, the Rail Preservation Fund, and the Freight Fund.
